Art is discovering through observation. It stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of responding to the world. Pupils use colour, pattern, form, texture and different materials to communicate what they see, feel and think. They learn to make informed value judgments and aesthetic and practical decisions that shape the environment.

At Leweston we aim to foster the individual's creative ability and develop the technical skills necessary to bring them to their full potential. Emphasis is placed on developing each child’s confidence, value and pleasure in art.

Children are encouraged to express opinions and ideas about the world around them and to understand the role of art in society and how it is used to inform and shape environments. Care is taken to heighten each child’s visual, spatial and tactile awareness of the world around them and to raise their levels of sensitivity to art materials, what these materials can do and the kind of images they make, so that they can begin to use them to express themselves emotionally and creatively.
