Medals Galore for Leweston at National Schools' Biathle
Thank you to all those that helped make this weekend's National Schools Biathle at Leweston another great School and Pentathlon Club success...
Leweston is delighted to have been awarded Academy status by Pentathlon GB with effect 1st January 2016, making it the eighth Pentathlon Academy in the country. The award has been made in recognition of the support and contribution the school has made to the sport of Modern Pentathlon and the development of Leweston and local community athletes. A Pentathlon GB representative commented.
Leweston makes a significant contribution to the PGB Pathway and is one of the cornerstones of the GB Biathle Squad. Resident Coach Mr Mick Flaherty has worked tirelessly towards earning Academy status for the school and he is congratulated for the significant contribution he has made. Well done.
All ‘Athlon’ sports, such as Modern Pentathlon, Triathlon (swim/bike/run), Biathlon and Pony Club Tetrathlon are on offer to all girls at the school, with participants encouraged to reach their own goals and ambitions. All levels are catered for, from complete novices to those competing nationally and even internationally, as part of Team GB.
There are weekly swimming and running programmes held on site and girls are also offered the chance to undertake regular biking training. Specialist shooting and fencing tuition is also available on a twice weekly basis, courtesy of Alan Brown, one of Pentathlon GB’s top shooting coaches and Dan Robinson, an international fencer and one of the region’s leading fencing coaches.
Leweston is also a regional training centre for Modern Pentathlon, running monthly training days for Pentathlon and Triathlon (swim/bike/run) and hosting up to 6 different types of multi-sports events during the year. Leweston hosts residential and non-residential Biathle, Triathlon and Tetrathlon training camps over the Easter and summer holidays and in addition to this, the school has links to the Cattistock Pony Club, playing host to their annual Triathlon and Tetrathlon events.
Leweston’s facilities are excellent, offering pupils the chance to try and excel at not only the ‘Athlon’ sports but also swimming, cross country, netball, hockey, football, basketball, rugby, athletics, tennis, fencing, shooting, sailing and horse riding. The school boasts a dynamic sports department with inspirational and specialist members of staff for all disciplines. These staff members bring their own personal expertise and enthusiasm to everything they do, including the dedicated training and mentoring programmes that are tailored to an individual’s needs and abilities. Indeed, all girls are encouraged to pursue any sport that interests them. Support is then offered to ensure that they can develop and achieve the very best of their ability and compete at the level of competition that they aspire to.
