Our library is at the heart of the school, combining study areas, a computer suite, presentation area and comfy sofas with modern beech shelving in a large room with windows overlooking the grounds.
The link between literacy and reading for pleasure is well known as is the impact this has on attainment across the curriculum. At Leweston this concept is fully embraced with the provision of an outstanding collection of fiction to appeal to pupils of all abilities and ages.
There is a growing trend towards online reference resources and this is an area of particular development in recent years. Online subscriptions are managed through our Virtual Learning Environment so that they are available to pupils and staff in school and over the internet. These resources include the Philip Allan 'A' Level Magazines (14 subjects), Digital Theatre Plus providing access to over 40 full-length theatre productions and excellent cross-curricular resources to explore social and global issues.
Non-fiction books remain important to support specific areas of the curriculum, personal research and interests and these are reviewed and updated too. Textbooks and other reference books are available for pupils working in the library. We have a film cupboard too with over 400 DVDs and this is especially popular with boarders who like to get together to watch a movie.
Our library catalogue is internet based and pupils with smartphones or tablets can download our library app to find books, films and websites and to check their library account. Students can also access the library catalogue from a computer or using a library iPad. Pupils also enjoy writing book and film reviews online.
All pupils and staff are encouraged to participate in the continuing development of the library to ensure that it remains relevant in the faces of changes in education, resources and technology.
